I am building a 4th bedroom in my attic. The window will be located on the side of the house. The side is covered with vinyl. I would like to put a new construction window in. This will be difficult because of the vinyl that is currently there. There are two thoughts I have to do the install:

1) Cut this vinyl flush with the window opening. The problem with this method is nailing the nailing flange/fin in because the vinyl will be in the way.

2) Cut the vinyl back and skirting the nailing flange/fin. This would make installation and nailing much easier, but how do I finish this off? If I don't, the nailing flange/fin will be exposed.

#2 seems easier, but not as neat.

P.S. - This window is going to be about 30 feet up. This will be on the side of the house and there is no roof to stand on.

I have thought of putting a replacement window in because it would be easier and safer, but I am concerned with rain and wind over time

Please help!! Thanks

dubell,

Welcome to DoItYourself.com and the door and window forum.

Put plan #1 and plan #2 in the circular file. Either way is going to result in a leaky window that will detroy the wall, all the way to the foundation!

The NEW plan #1 is going to be to rent scaffolding to get you up the outside of the wall to where the window is going to be, remove the vinyl siding to a level below where the window will be, install the window and get it sealed, trim and/or "J" around it to match all the other windows in the house, then reinstall the vinyl siding.

The NEW plan #2 is going to be to hire a vinyl siding contractor do the same thing.

Excellent, then we are in agreement. I actually had an epiphany to go this route while I was buying the window. I am going to take the siding off just below the rough opening and re-install after I install the new construction window. This guarantees a good seal. Sounds like I am on the right track.

Thanks Lefty

An "epiphany"?? That's not anything fatal or contagious, is it???
