Hi,
I just ripped the carpet off long covered oak floors in a 1918 home I just bought. There's water stains down the middle of the room (looks like a river ran through it) and major squeaking, plus slight buckling in one small area. (not so much). Underneath this oak is fir (and beneath that a base layer of unfinished fir). The finished fir looks quite old -- the finish is yellowed and a bit crackling. Could be the original flooring? I took of the end plank of oak to take a look at it -- from there it seems in okay shape.
I'm wondering now: is it best to take up the oak and see if the fir underneath looks better or B) best to sand and finish the oak and just put up with the squeaking? (i cant tell if it's the oak or the fir squaking) or C) should i head down to the salvage place and pick up some oak to replace the stuff that was water damaged or D) ???
Thanks,
Michelle

Call in a professional, if just for a consultation, to see if it will sand out, and be worth repairing.
