We have a house built by my great-grandfather that has beautiful hardwood trim around the door frames and window casings. However, over time they were painted over with regular interior latex paint. The paint never did stick very well because the original hardwood was finished. How do I get all of this old paint off (some of it will just peel off) without damaging the original finish on the hardwood.

It is possible to remove latex paint with lacquer thinner. If it does not affect the original finish, this will be the answer. Dampen a cloth with lacquer thinner and wipe off the latex. This will be tedious, but should work. Lacquer thinner will burn explosively, so take care using it by providing sufficient ventilation and so forth.
Hope this helps.
