I'm planning to use an exterior latex paint on the exterior of my house. The problem is I'm unsure what kind of paint is on there now.... Oil or latex.... A friend told me that the new latex paints are just fine over oil... Is this true? Also whats better a SOLID COLOR ACRYLIC LATEX STAIN or just plain latex?
thx

Do the test, rub it with denatured alcohol. If the paint comes off, its latex. If it doesn't, its oil.

Is he willing to come over and help scrape it all off it it doesn't work???

The stain works well if it hasn't been painted before, but since it has, I'd use plain latex.
If it turns out to be oil, I'd prime it with an exterior alkyd primer, then finish it with exterior latex. I believe the latex holds up to the weather better than the oils nowadays.
