I have a rotted 6X6 post on the corner of my carport. (totally exposed to the outside) I have a plan I'd like to run by someone who actually knows what they are doing before I try it.... I want to cut say another 6X6 or even a 4X4 post wedge it in to lift the beam off the post ever so slightly. After that I'll put in the new 6X6 post nail it in and pull out the wedged post. Is this an acceptable way to do this? the post itself is about 7ft tall....
thanks

Good technique. Another approach is to cut the support the same height and drive wedges under it to raise it, or cut it a tad shy and use a lever to lift it and set a block under it so you can raise it with the lever to remove the block and lower the support after the new post is installed.

great thanks for the reply... I think I'll use the wedge method and just bang it out when I'm done.... Sounds like the most finite method i've heard so far.... I really only need to raid the beam about 1-3mm to get the job done...
