Fireplaces, Heating Stoves, Flues and Chimneys - opening back of fireplace thru old bbq

We just bought a 1941 house. It has a shallow fireplace in the living room. Directly behind it in the sunroom is a plaster closed bbq, which I understand from the realtor once stuck out into the sunroom, which was not enclosed. A look at the chimney on the roof shows two flues. Can we remove the back of the living room fireplace and thru into the sunroom to create a see through. I asked my gen'l contractor and all he could suggest was replace both with a prefab see through fireplace. I don't want to do this because it would ruin the look of the fireplace in the living room. Should I contact a mason? Where do I find one with fireplace experience?

Do not do this for wood burning. It most likely will not draw properly.
If you're planning on creating a see-through gas fireplace, you should be able to do it.
Consult your Building Inspection Department for local code on the subject before doing it.
