I have an old harlem brownstone and am refinishing the floors and wainscoting - can I oil the woodwork with linseed oil and then when it dries a bit cover it with a few thin coats of polyurethane???? must I use oil based poly or can I use the water based?? OR can I use nothing other than the oil? someone just told me that once I use the linseed oil, I can't use anything else at all. please help. charlie

There are oils and alkyks in oilbase polyurethane, so there's really no need to use the linseed first. You could use both, but it's sort of overkill.
I would not apply linseed and then try to use waterbase poly. The waterbase poly is a bit more difficult to apply, - brush strokes and it raises the grain. It needs to be sanded lightly between coats. It will maintain a clear finish and will not yellow with age like oil poly.
