Help! I have oak floors that are 90+ years old. They are in good condition but need to be spruced up a bit. I need to determine what type of finish is on them. I have tried the water test (for wax), it does not leave a white mark. The water doesn't get absorbed, but when I wipe it up there are clear rings where the drops were. I have also scratched the surface and there is no flaking. What came up looked like a light brown wax (it balled up on the knife). Is there any other way to tell without having to call in a professional?
Thank you!

A century ago there were homemade floor finish recipes used, especially boiled linseed oil concoctions. Apply a few drops of boiled linseed oil (Don't boil it, as it's already boiled.) and if it is absorbed, then you have an oil finish.
