How often should I have my flues cleaned out?

I have two flues, one for a gas fired steam boiler (+ gas fired hot water heater) and the other for the fireplace.

The fireplace is used maybe 20X a year.

I had someone call and said they would charge me $40 for the furnace flue, they would check the fireplace flue and if needed, they would charge an extra $30 for cleaning that if it was needed at all.

It is recommended that you have wood burning fireplace chimneys cleaned and inspected (preferably with a video camera) every year.
Check with a flashlight. If you can't see the color of the flue liner, the creosote should be cleaned.
Those seem to be very reasonable quotes BTW.
Good luck!

If the gas flue has a linner and there are no pieces of it down in the clean out there Id say its ok. On the fire place. Look around there and see if you cant buy some "ChimneySweep". Read on the box how to use it . works very good and will keep that fireplace flue clean for you.
