when purchasing grass seed do I need to be concerned with the grass only growing that year. I was told to be careful,& read for perreniel or annual, was told many grass seeds are set up for contractors with a quick fix solution. This information was given to me by an employee of the garden dept of a hugh home improvement company. Thanks Chrissy :)

I would be careful not to buy a grass that is all annual seeds. Most grass seeds are a mixture of annual and perennial seeds. The mixture is so you get fast results and some of will re-sprout next year. I would not be scared that your grass contains SOME annual seeds, I would just be careful not to get a bad of seed that is mostly annual and not perennial. Some of the bags give a % of each seed in the bag. Most bags from big companies will tell you. So, it is some thing to pay attention to but, I would not worry to much about it.

When buying grass seed, it is valuable to find out from the label what percentage of the contents is the desired seed and how much of it is weeds. The cheap stuff will have less grass and more weeds. False economy to buy cheap seed.

Hello Chrissy and Welcome to DoItYourself.com :)
Not sure where you are writing from, but here in Canada, bags of Grass seed only need to have percentages and varieties listed in quantities over 2.2 kg (~5 lbs) - Often you can look on a larger package of the same blend to determine what you are buying, or if buying in bulk, the bins will be labelled.
As both Chris & Matt indicate, better quality seed will normally be weed free. A lot of the cool season annual grasses will set and drop seed in the first season, so it often appears that you have perennial grass - often, after aeration, seed that is exposed to higher light levels will germinate (Annual Ryegrass is a good example of this).
If you maintain a healthy stand, it won't really matter if there is annual seed in the mix as longas you aren't aiming for a single type of turfgrass in your lawn (ie: Kentucky Bkuegrass). A mix is normally better for a low to medium maintained sward as it is normally not affected as drastically in the event of disease or drought.
Hope this helps
