I'll be floating my wood floor over concrete. A diy book I'm using recommends nailing a starter board (e.g., a furring strip) to the concrete as a guide. Haven't tried to do that yet, but it seems that manually nailing into concrete will be difficult if not impossible. Any suggestions? thanks!

Fit The Floating Floor The Same Way You Would Install A Laminate. ( Except, Use A Bigger Expantion Gap. ) Are The Walls Straight ? If So, Use A Scrap Piece Of The Laminate As Your Spacer Against The Wall As Your Guide For Straightness And Expantion. When The Job Is Complete, Talk Away The Scrap Spacer Boards And Put Your Baseboard On To Cover The Gaps.

DO NOT NAIL A STARTER!!!!!
At your starting point, glue 4-6 rows together, strap clamping and blue taping them good so they don't gap.
I hope you ground all the high spots and filled the low spots on that concrete! 1/8 inch in 6 feet or 3/16 inch in 10 feet!!!! if you didn't, plan on disposing of that disposable floor faster then you expected!!!
Pull a string line tight across the surface of the concrete! Your going to be shocked. Floor prep is the main part of installing a floater! Skip the floor prep and cry the blues later!!!
