I have accidentally left a not pan on top of my wood countertop and now there is a big darkened circle. It's superficial enough so I think sanding will solve the problem. But I will have to refinish it with a waterproof finish. The one on now is matte and doesn't seem to be a varnish exactly. Does anyone know what it is? Alternatively, what could I use?

Varnish comes in a matte finish.
