I've been building a deck using ACQ treated lumber for the substructure, and I'm hearing bad things about ACQ's corrosive effects. I've used heavily galvanized fasteners for most connections, but the piers are just Home Depot standard, with two metal flanges embedded in a concrete pyramid. The flanges are only lightly galvanized, and I'm concerned that if those flanges rust out badly I might have to pull apart the deck to replace the piers.
My question is, is there any sort of barrier I can put between the flanges and the wood to protect the flanges? Zinc sheeting comes to mind, but I'm not sure whether that would cause other problems. Silicon caulk also sounds like a possible since it would break any electrical connection between the wood and the flanges. Any suggestions or opinions would be welcome.

I wish I could really help you. I am about 50% done with my deck and am having the same dillema. I have been told, Zinc = bad, and galvanized = OK. Also SS = OK. Then I find out that some galvanized metals contain a large qty of zinc. So what gives? SS is too damn expensive IMO. I am using deck screws that are "coated" and are said to handle the new pt chemicals but the screws are NOT SS. Can anyone help out with a wood preservative vs. metal fastener/bracing material compatability chart/list? Thanks all: e3

I'm in the same boat - building a deck and hearing about the corrosion issue. In order to isolated the ACQ from the hardware on some of the important connections (like your flanges) I lined the bracket with Vycor Plus rubber flashing. It comes in rolls with one self-adhesive side and is easy to cut to fit.

Galvanizing is the process of coating a ferrous metal with zinc to prevent rust. The higher the percentage of zinc in the coating the better the quality of the coating.
