could someone give me an idea about what part could be faulty. i found a perfect TV in the trash yesterday and everything seems to work well (sound, power, etc.) except the screen just stays black...does this sound like an easy problem to fix or should it go back in the trash??? thanks so much

Impossible to tell with the few clues available. It could be a defective picture tube ( an expensive fix ) or you could have HV problems ( Another expensive fix ). Unless you are comfortable with dismantling the TV set and wouldn't mind ( and have the equipment ) for checking the high voltage ( 40,000 volts ), then I would put the TV back where you found it. There could be many causes for a 'no picture' condition in a TV set, some simiple, and some not so simple, but unless you have some test equipment, and the knowledge to use it then it's impossible to proceed much further.

Without a model number then we no clue what normal failures are for your set. As for the high voltage mentioned, is should never go about 27,000-30,000 volts. If it went to 40k you would be dealing with Xrays. But the set has too many saftey features to prevent that. Yes Sony's can have bad picture tubes, but just as likely, they can be weak (but useable). The first thing would be to pop the back and make sure the boards are not cracked. When some one throws out a TV, they usually don't set it down gently.
