What is the better backing choice for putting ceramic wall tiles for walls in the bathroom which are not near the wet areas (i.e., tub, shower)? The material will be going directly on the joists.
Is there any downside to using greenboard?

Greenboard is o.k. as long as the wall will not see any water like in a shower. The tile on the greenboard you want to use mastic and not mortar cause the moisture from the thinset will loosen the paper on the greenboard and may release itself from the sheetrock

so you might as well skip the green board and use standard dry wall.

Thank you both for your responses. A follow up question to ee3. then what's the advantage of greenboard?
Also, for the bath/shower area, what are the prep steps once the cementboard is up and what should be used to attach the tiles to the cementboard?
Thanks Again!
