I have recently gutted a stand-up shower stall down to the studs and will be re-tileing it again. Do I need to install that cement board on the walls of the shower stall, and how do I go about tiling the ceiling...which is currently studs as well. Also, on the floor of the shower is a lead piece that goes about 8 " up the walls. Should I leave this in place and tile directly over it? The job that I tore up was a old mud job.
Any advice?

Thats the old lead shower pans they used to use.Is the pan still intact? any holes?you may want to consider tearing that out as well and start with a new pan.At the very least you will need to re-mud the pan and use durock on the walls and ceiling. You can use dead men for the tile on the ceiling or you can use bondo on the corners of the tile to hold them in place while the thinset is drying

thanks for the suggestions. I have put up the durarock, and I will use the bondo when tiling the ceiling. Thanks again

and yes, the lead pan is still intact, although I was planning installing a new liner over it.

Just use the bondo on the corners of the tile and thinset on the rest of the tile, hold the tile in place for about a minute and then the bondo should have dried eneough to hol the tile maybe a little longer than 1 minute..

It is reccomended that you do a "preslope" on the pan before you put the liner in so when water gets under the tile as it will then the water has a place to go and not pool up under the tile and cause the pressure to push the tile up and thus fail. You may conside just pulling the pan out cause doing this preslope you will need to nail the wire lathe into the floor and punch a bunch of holes in it anyway, then after the preslope you can lay the liner in then float the remainder for you're pan then tile

OK - what do I use to do the preslope? The shower floor seems flat and currently the lead liner is as well. Should I use the morter to create a pre-slope towards the drain? Then come back and install the liner and then start tiling the floor?
