My kitchen walls are now painted with latex paint. Is there any prep work
that needs to be done before applying the tiles? Should there be any worry about the drywall getting wet after the tile is installed? Should a layer of water proofing be applied before tiling? I don't want to cut out the drywall to install a special backing.

No need to rip out the drywall as long as it's in good shape, you can just tile right over it. Good luck & post back if you run into any snags. ;)
