I have a buffet and hutch and I would really like to know if ther is a way to tell if it is real wood or veneer. I would like to sand it and stain it to match other items. any suggestions?

Look at the back. The edges should be visible and you can see if it's solid wood, plywood, or what. If it's plywood, look closely at the outside edge. You should be able to see how thick the 'good' veneer is. If you try to sand, be careful that you don't sand through the veneer layer.

The best way to refinish is to strip then stain and finish, not sand off the finish.
