I live in a hi-rise in NYC and have a small balcony, approximately 10’ x 6 ‘. The balcony is actually 20’ in total length and extends over to the neighboring apartment, but there is a partition separating the space. It is a concrete balcony and currently has a covering of exterior carpet. I’d like to pull the carpet and install terra cotta tiles. I have a few questions through.
First, the edge of the balcony has an aluminum (I think) flashing about 3 ½” deep. The railing stanchions are just inboard of this flashing. Should I tile up to – but not over the flashing? Right now the carpet does not cover the flashing. I could foresee big problems if the flashing needed to be replaced if it were covered by tile.
Second, should I use a bull nose tile to butt up against the flashing, or just leave an unfinished tile edge there? One side of the balcony will just terminate because if I continue to tile in that direction, I will be extending into my neighbors space past the partition. Again, do I do this with a bull nose or do I just stop tiling along that edge? I’m not quite certain how that would look.
What about thinset and grout? Any special types I need to use for an exterior application?
TIA.

Tipsy;
In regards to your question, take a look at Schulter Systems. Their website is at WWW.schulter.com
I have sent to them for information and they answered all my questions. They even sent me video cassettes for installation instructions. Even if you don't use them you can get some ideas from their methods.
Also, I live in the NYC area also. If you are in a coop make sure you are allowed to tile. Some boards are a REAL pain in the butt!
Hope this helps.
PS I don't work for Schulter, just found their info great.
