The best way: sandblasting

The easy way: there is none

Heat gun or blow torch, wire brush, muriatic acid and elbow grease I've been told will work as well. My fireplace brick was painted a disgusting yellow color that really didn't age well and I poised the same question. Short answer was pick a new color that you like. It's a tremendous amount of work due to the little pores in brick.

Phillyguy, you are definitely right. All those methods are tough and messy. Good call about picking a more desirable color, or natural stone or brick, and doing that.
