I am planning to paint vertical stripes in our nursery, but am concerned about the best method.

I have already painted the entire wall solid and plan to paint the stripes over the already painted surface. My concern is that I will probably need two coats, but I am hesitant to leave the tape on the wall while the paint dries between coats beacuse I am concerned about peeling when I remove the tape.

On the other hand removing the tape directly after the first coat and re-taping for the second coat will obviously not create the crisp line that I seek.

I am using a semi-gloss Behr paint. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Fred

Use the blue painter's tape, it should be fine for 2 coats, IF the base coat was applied correctly and is adhered well.

Sorry I didn't explain well, I've let the base coat dry for two weeks so I am fairly confident that it will not peel.

I am concerned that the first coat of the second color will be adhere to the tape more than the wall so that when I pull the tape after the second coat, it will peel some of the stripes.

The reason I ask is that I have forgotten to pull tape in the past and let it dry for say 2 hours and it peeled the fresh paint. Should I let the second color dry completely before pulling the tape or will I have to re-tape for a second coat.

Thanks

Is the base coat semi-gloss too? If so, after you lay out and apply the tape, make sure to use your fingernail and really set the edge of the tape that you will be painting up against. You can also use some 120 grit sandpaper and gently rough up the areas between the tape where the stripes will be to help the stripe paint adhere.

And most importantly, use the tape only as a safety net, not as a guide, meaning don't slather paint on it. Don't try to get any paint on it at all. Its there so you if you do accidently go over the line, you don't get paint on the basecoat. Its not there to draw the line for you. If you are careful, and take your time, occasional 1/8" or 1/4" overlaps won't be enough to pull the paint up when the tape is stripped off.

So yeah, leave the tape on for both coats, but pull the tape immediately after the second coat.

Hi Fred-
Prowallguy is right...use blue painters tape or you will be in trouble! Masking tape will pull your basecoat right off!

Burnish the edges of the tape with your fingernail or with a credit card before you apply the strip color, then pull the tape immediately after your second coat of stripe paint.

If you begin to have any trouble at all with your paint beginning to peel, get a razor knife and score along the edge of the tape before you begin to remove it.

Happy painting...and congrats on the new addition to the family!
