I have a lawnmower with a model 93902, type 3117-01 Briggs and Stratton that takes 10 -12 pulls to start, runs slow for a number of seconds and then runs well. It also starts on first pull every time after warmed up. How can I get this to start easier on first pull?

It could be as simple as that your sparkplug is very dirty and needs replacing. Or it could be that your carb is starving for fuel on a cold start, it could be that you are not using fresh gas. Let us know if your using fresh gas or not, and also check your sparkplug.

This engine has a diaphragm accuated choke - in other words, an automatic choke. You will likely find you will need to replace this diaphragm and you should be good. Briggs# - 391681 diaph. or the rebuild kit# - 494623. Either one of of these Briggs parts comes with instructions. Follow these, especially in regard to pre-loading the diaphragm spring.

The choke could very well be the cause, but I would still not want to rule out a dirty sparkplug. I have had a hard time starting a engine before when come to find out the sparkplug was extremly tard and carbined up.
Let us know how it goes.:)

Hello slim!
I agree with puey61. You described the symptoms of a bad diaphragm perfectly. One other less common thing that can cause your problem is valve clearance problems.
