I want to install tile over the brick hearth around my fireplace and around the fireplace opening which has been covered with birch plywood then painted.Do I need an underlayment? Can I mortar directly to the brick? Can I attach the tiles to go around the fireplace opening with construction glue then grout?Any HELP greatly appreciated!!!

If brick to be covered is unpainted in everyway including urethane, then it will be good to go.
To apply tile to plywood, rough sand area to be covered by tile, to take away finish and leave rough to aide in glues holding power. I use a product from a caulk gun called (Liquid Nail).
