We had a concrete driveway poured a year and a half ago ago. At the time the contractor told us that it didn't need to be sealed. Now, after two Chicago winters we are getting flaking. Pieces about 3 inches in diameter and about the thickness of a quarter. Is this normal or should the surface have been sealed? Can it be sealed now? If so, what products would you recommend?

A sealer would have helped, but it seems to me that you got a poorly placed and/or cured concrete slab, which has resulted in early freeze-thaw failure. I would call the contractor back, however unlikely it is he will do something.

My father in law had the same problem with his concrete, if you look at area underneath the concrete chip that has lifted and notice a flat rock there then this is your problem the flat rock should not be in concrete at all if this is not the case nevermind but if it is this is something you should briing to the attention of the concrete supplier he should make it right
