Flooring Tile - Granite Tile Countertops - Questions

I'm planning to install 12x12 inch granite tiles on a kitchen countertop. Local Home improvement store reps have suggested that this can be done right over a stable formica countertop, and they have recommended a product called Laticrete as a grout material. They have also suggested it is possible to place the tiles with essentially zero clearance between them if the desired result is something close to a continuous surface. I have also read about using an epoxy grout based on its imperviousness to stains, mold, and bacterial contamination.

I'd appreciate any input from folks who have had some experience with this on what options have worked the best.

I have never laid tile on formica but i have heard of people that have,don't know what happened though either.Personally i WON'T lay tile on formica cause it just adds another variable in the mix of things to go wrong.I would take the top off use 2 layers 3/4 c.d.x. plywood(rated for outdoors) screw and glue them together and then the only time i will use 1/4 durock is on top the ply wood glued and screwed also.

Fasten that to the cabinets and then tile.

With granite go small on the joints 1/16 ,do not butt the tile,and then for grout you can use the unsanded version of the epoxy but be very careful and follow the directions on the back of the container to the letter, with the epoxy:cool:
