We have a GE potscrubber dishwasher, approx 5 years old (came with the house). It worked fine til my daughter sat down (hard) (by accident) on the open door yesterday. The door is cracked in two places on the outside (metal) and two places on the inside, it's hard to tell how damaged the hinges are. It closes and latches, but not smoothly, and I think it would leak if we tried to use it. I called the local appliance place where it was purchased (they're usually pretty good) and they said the door is $85, the hinges $15, and insulation (if needed) $15 - 20; with labor it would cost about $200. A new one from them would be about $300 plus $100 installation. My questions are as follows:
1. How hard is it to fix the door? How do you determine which parts you need?
2. What is the average lifespan of a dishwasher? As I said, it was working fine til yesterday.

Hello: glenside4kids
Replacing the entire door may or may not be needed. All depends on the frame. If not bent or damaged, repair can be done by replacing only damaged parts and pieces.
A do it yourself project using a few commonly found tools and a little handywork. Simply remove door and note how you accomplished that task. And all tasks for that matter.
Replace hinges and inner and oter panels, door gasket, etc which is damaged. Reinstall as found. A few hours maybe but labor can be saved and a great learning project to learn from.
Once completed and tested, no leaks should be noted. Than use the reply button to update this post with the step by step details and the final results. In doing so all readers of this question learn more...:)
