What is the best way to paint MDF (without a sprayer)? I have never worked with MDF, but I will this weekend. I have heard the edges soak up the paint, so how is this corrected?

Prime it with a sealing type primer, preferably alkyd based. Hit the edges twice if it looks to be a problem. Then finish it in the product of your choice.
