Hello,

I'm new here, but have a question. We are purchaing a new van with lots of windows. My husband plans to use it for hauling his tools, etc. Is there a good way to coat or tint the windows? I'm reading how to's on removing tint. Sounds like a lot of trouble. We have approximately 8 double windows (16 panes altogether) which will need to be treated. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Check with your loacl DMV regarding tinting windows. In California, there are specific laws about tinting.

I'm only interested in tinting rear windows of van. I will check before doing anything. I appreciate the suggestion.

misnancyg,

2 ways to go -- you can buy the film and tint the windows yourself, or you can have it done professionally. I've seen the results of both, and personally, I would pay the few extra dollars and leave it to a pro. California Vehicle Code simply says you can't do the windshield and limits how dark you make the driver's and passenger's side widows (and it isn't much!), but after that, you're fine.

I guess I'm looking for any alternate methods, such as having a mirror coat applied or other possible solutions which may be easier to remove if desired.

I don't think there is an easy way to remove window tinting unless it hasn't been on for a long time.

I found my window tinter in the yellow pages. I agree that it may be wise to pay the little extra and have a professional do the job. See if they provide any guarantees. The law in Florida allowed a darker tint than the law in Texas so you need to be sure you comply with local law. A professional window tinter should have that information.

Another thing to consider is that newer model vehicles have curved windows. These are a challenge to tint, you need a film with pressure sensitive adheasive so it will stick to the glass right away and not fall off like dry adheasives would. Heat shrinking is the common technique for curved windows, there is definitely some skill needed for this. Some Vans like the Ford Aerostar have curved back windows.
