I have an 80 year old executive desk with an appraised value of of $11,500. It was damaged in a fire. The insurance company has offered to cover the (extensive) repair; I'd rather have the cash. Is this possible? How do I approach them?

Get professional written repair estimates, submit them to your insurance company adjuster, and they should just issue you a check for a settlement amount based on the quotes. Whether or not you use the money to have the repairs done, or not, is up to you.
Good Luck!

I think that would probably depend on whether you had that item specifically scheduled on your insurance policy.

Thanks for your help. At first, they wanted to give me a check payable to me and the repair shop, but I said I wasn't sure I wanted to use that repair place. In the end, they gave me a check payable just to me, so everything worked out.
