I just replaced the direct drive pump on a whirlpool washer, but now when it spins, the whole thing jumps all over the place. I leveled it, but still have the problem. I noticed a few pins held in plastic cups under the basket, but it looked like they were used when it was shipped. Do they need to be attached to something?

Hello: tbrentlong

Confused...???? More specific details needed.

Your quote: "I noticed a few pins held in plastic cups under the basket, but it looked like they were used when it was shipped."

Describe pins. What kind of pins?

Plastic cup? Where? Attached to tub? On the bottom of tub or bottom of cabinet?

Basket? You mean the tub where the clothes are put into?
What basket? Describe the basket please.

When it was shipped? The washer or the new pump?
Washer new? Or have you had it awhile?

If the machine ran fine prior to the new pump installation, did you have to remove the tub to install the new pump? If not, the washers tub should not be off balance.

If the tub was removed to install the new pump, the balancers need to be reinstalled as they where or they are premaneately attached and did not come off.

Some machines used springs to balance the tub or clothes drum.
Words for tub could be drum or basket, sometimes the words can be interchangeablly used. Needed to clarify also please.

Sorry for the unclear descriptions -- I'm certainly a newbie to appliance repair.

On the support metal under the tub (the "basket"), there were two small plastic cups that each held a metal pin about an inch and a half long. The pin appeared to just be sitting in the plastic cup, but directly above the cup is a hole in the triangular metal plate. Each pin fits up through the hole and into additional holes in other plates. The top of each pin is pointed and looks like a cotter pin could be placed in it.

The tub was not removed to put the pump on. The tub has four springs attached for balancing.

Thanks.

Hi: tbrentlong

Take a closer look at those pins. The intent is to ensure they are not sheared off from the parts they hold together. The loose springs may have cuased the out of balance condition, which in turn may have sheared the pins....????...Guessing here.

May be worth a closer look. Also check the bottom inside of cabinet. May find broken parts or other pieces of sheared pins.

If the pins appear to have fallen into the cups, whatever they are, they may be sheared off. Or never installed prior...maybe? If they hold parts together, try to dtermine where and attempt to replace them. May be the pins which hold the springs??? Guessing since cannot invision it.

Got it now...a basket is the tub...:)

Those pins are shipping pins, when the washer was new there was a yellow cord to pull out the pins then fall into the plastic cup. only used to keep the tub from moving during transport.

that is very normal on a direct drive washer whirlpool

just replacing the pump should not cause vibration,
lift up on the back and try to relevel again,

unless your balance ring around the tub has leaked.

I looked the pins over, and they appear to hold the suspension ring (a triangular shaped piece of metal kind of like a donut) in a stationary position with relation to the main support stand during shipment. I used them to position the suspension ring correctly, then removed them once it was in place, and now everything is working perfectly!

Thanks!
