I was at a job site about a year ago and noticed a box of 20d ring-shanked nails lying about and am wondering what a typical application for these large nails is! It would seem that whatever is being nailed together, you'd pretty much need to be sure where you tied it together because the nails would be a real bear to pull back out!

Some information I found says: Heavy duty, ring-shanked holding power for pole-type construction, treated construction, treated posts, and timbers.

The 20d RS we sell come in several typical styles;
a) common ... 31 per lb - 6 ga - 4"
b) box ... 52 per lb - 9 ga - 4"
c) finish ... 62 per lb - 10 ga - 4"
d) double headed a.k.a duplex or scaffold ... 30 per lb - 6 ga - 4"
e) spike ... 16 per lb - 4 ga - 4"
which should give you ideas for their intended uses.
