I am trying to plant some plants and flowers that will come back year after year (minimal maintenance). I live in the DC area, and we have fairly rocky soil in our yard. Any suggestions?

How big an area? Sun or shade? Do you want blooms, evergreens, grasses, trees? What do you like? Existing trees? Can you improve the soil?
