My garbage disposal is constantly stuck even though there's nothing in it. I flip the switch and it just hums.
The first time it happened, I got it turning by hand (well broomstick to be exact) and hit the reset button. It spun up just like new when turned on. A day later it stopped again, and even though I can spin it by broomstick it won't go when i hit the reset button and turn it on. Any ideas?

Hello: HotBacon
Based on the fact that the cutter blades can run sometimes but not always, may indicate that water is getting into the top assembly to form rusting.
May also be getting into the top section of the motor somehow, likely through a defective or worn seal. I would suggest removing the two assemblies and inspecting.
If there is no evidence of rust or water leakage, the motor itself may be binding up. A bench test can be done to verify if the motor is running correctly.
But be sure the motor is proerly grounded and secured to the bench or it will or may spin around and fall off....:(
Also inspect the middle section for binding, etc. There is also a part between the motor and the cutter blade assembly which may be damaged or defective.

Sounds like time for a new disposal save time and money without buying a new seal and still have the old motor.
I would go with a new unit
