What's the best way to hang pictures on old plaster walls?

Pre drill with a nice new drill bit. Put your fastener in on a stud. If no stud is available then use an anchor. Type of anchor depends on weight of art. I say pre drill because when you pound a nail into the plaster it usually chips a big piece off.

It might sound crazy but I actually find drywall easier to hang pics on then drywall. I agree with predrilling but the nice thing about plaster (one of the few) is that its full of wooden slats the entire length. Granted they're thin (maybe 1/8 inch??) but enough to hold a picture. In other words, with drywall you have to find a beam for hanging but with plaster you almost always hit wood (unless you happen to hit a spot between the slats (maybe a 1/4 inch gap between them). If it makes you feel any better, I hung 4 speakers from my plaster wall just by taking a screwdriver and putting a screw in (no drilling). Speakers have been hanging for over a year!
