There's a door that I'm planning on removing permanently and will be painting the trim white. I'm removing the hinges and now I'm stuck with the cut wood where the hinges were. I'm assuming that the only way to fix this is to remove the wood. Is there an easier way to cover this??

Remove the old door jamb & trim it out with new wood is the solution I'd suggest.

I fill these areas with Durham's Rock Hard Putty. Sand it to shape, prime and paint it.

patch it.
first glue in some shims if the area is mortised deep.
use a piece of dowel with glue to fill the latch area.
