In the process of remodeling our basement, I have a fireplace with brick extending 12" above the firebox and 20" on the sides. Is there any issues with installing sheetrock and a plastic vapor barrier on the wall so close to the fireplace opening?

Shouldn't be a problem. definitely isn't if it's gas.

Similar situation here.
I have brickwork 5" above my mantel cap and above that, a 6" 'header'. Should the VB extend down over the brick as well and if so, should I just let it lay against the brick or use that black 'caulking' to attach the VB to the brick? I was planning on putting the sheetrock over the brick (and behind the gap of the mantel cap). Its a tad over 12' wide wall x 8' high. - and Im still trying to figure out the best way to maximize my sheetrock and cut around the fireplace.
What do think?

Jatco,
I'm not understanding why you're covering the brickwork with drywall or a VB.

The brick is not decorative/finished brick. Its part of the 'firebox'. The wall was originally P&L w/blown insulation. All that has been removed and re-insulated with R14 batt with a new electrical line from on original outlet on the right side of the wall,up and across the wall around the fireplace, to the left side. I now have to put up VB and drywall. The fireplace 'surround' is 44" high by 5' wide and 5" off the wall and covered in cultured stone. The brick to be covered is from the original firebox (part of the bare wall) and flush with the 2x4 studs where the VB and drywall will be attached. The old brick will be behind and covered by the drywall.
Does that make sense?.

i have seen code issues were we were required to put durock cement board the 12" around the oppening.use the 5/8" 1 hour drywall board for the fireplace, and check with your local building inspecter, you can just ask him, code requirments, depends on the fireplace type used.

Do you think this would be a concern with a 'direct vent' gas insert in the firebox? Its no longer a wood burning fireplace.

should not be a problem with direct vent.whal will the temperture be around the closest part of the drywall, jim

From the top of the insert to where the drywall would be (over the old brick) is about 2' ..on the face of the fire place. Being this is a 'direct vent' the insert is absorbing the heat...and 1.- radiating the heat out into the room, and 2.- exausting the remainder up the 'liner' thru the chimney and out ....
I dont think there is much (if any) 'heat' at the brick.
With the insert operational, there is no heat (actually its rather cool) on that brick.
I think this brick is safe to cover... ie, should I place the VB over the brick then the drywall... It was originally covered with the old P&L. So I dont think there should be a problem.
Feedback is certainly welcomed.
Thanks
Thomas
