I have an RCA F36668 television that was manufactured in 6/2000. When it is plugged in it justs makes a constant high pitched noise and I get no picture at all. I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some direction. Ultimately, I'm hoping there is an easy inexpensive fix that I can do myself. However, in reading some other posts it sounds like I may have to involve a TV repair man. I would like to be able to talk knowledgeably with the repair man so I don't get taken to the cleaners. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if involving a repair man seems to be the only way to go, can anyone recommend someone reputable in the N. Dallas area.

This could be caused by many things. The high pitched noise could be caused by a faulty power supply.

Is the set not working at all. Or can you get a picture through the video inputs. Do you have any sound.

If none of these work I would guess that the power supply is the cause. Fixing something like this would for most people involve calling a repair person. On the other hand maybe you have a bad connection to the TV input and the high pitched noise could be coming from the horizontal scan circuit while it is unlocked - ie free running.

First off, thanks for the response. This is a great site, and can always count on someone to respond.
My TV won't power up at all, so I can't check for video inputs or audio output. Sounds to me like it has something to do with the power supply as you suggested. Any ideas on about how much I can expect to spend to fix it if I take it somewhere or have someone come look at it? I've only had the TV about 2 1/2 years and of course as Murphy's law goes I didn't opt for the extended warranty. I've already emailed RCA about what options I have, but am not expecting any help from them.

Cost is tricky for me to comment on as I don't do this for a living so I don't know what the going rate would be.

I would suggest

a) Ask family/friends if they know of a good repair facility or person locally.

b) get several quotes and see if they are similar and also if they make sense. If not you may be better off buying a new one.

I think you have been unlucky. For most people extended warranties are a good profit for the insurer and a complete waste of money for the buyer. In a few cases (usually after the event) one wonders why they did not get an extended warranty.

I got an extended warranty on my car and was regretting having done so. However, the transmission developed a leak and was found to have been due to a manufacturing fault. Whole transmission had to be stripped down and put together. At that point I was sure glad I had the warranty.

you prob. have a shorted horiz. output transistor caused by an open conn. on the coil on the base of the transistor. pretty common on the chassis that you have. might have taken out the regulator and a resistor in the power supply also.

thanks for the responses. I don't feel qualified enough to do the work myself. However, I do have a website that shows pricing for the items that you believe will need replaced. Along with knowing what is wrong and the cost of the parts that need replaced, I should be able to protect myself from being charged too much. Thanks again
