When this VCR (Philips VRA999) is plugged in the display lights up "--:--" instead of showing "12:00" or "0:00:00". There is a tape in the VCR and so that is also indicated on the display. When I push the power button, however, the unit does not power up and I cannot eject the tape. It does not respond in any way. The unit does not have very many hours on it. I don't want to spend a lot of money to repair it since I know VCRs are cheap now. Any ideas on why the unit sends power to the display but fails to power up the mechanical components?

Have you tried the pwoer button on the remote? Also, try unplugging it and plugging it back in.

Thank you for your suggestion, but both ideas were tried numerous times before I originally posted my inquiry. Unfortunately, the unit still does not power up properly.

Do you have it hooked up to a tv? Maybe it's in some kind of setup mode that is expecting input and he instructions displayed on the tv. You would think it would eject the tape regardless however...

try removing the tape inside the vcr manually, careful though, these newer type vcr's have **** for the carriage. cycle the tape with the load motor by hand or thumb and get the tape out. plug it in again then try to setup and program the vcr. good luck, snuffs :)

do you have a dual mode remote? Is it set to the vcr mode or tv mode? Try switching back to the vcr mode and give ir a try. Is it under warranty? good luck, snuffs
