All, I just bought a table from IKEA (yes it was cheap). It of course does not have a great finish on it. It is definitely stained but I'm not sure if it has a coat of sanding sealer on it. I want basically to put polyurethane on it and not worry about it but if there is sealer it won't stick. Is there a way to tell if sanding sealer has been applied? Any suggestions?

If you want to add poly, wash the surface with mineral spirits to remove any wax or grime, lightly sand with some 180 grit paper, then apply the poly. Sanding sealer is probably not exposed on your table. Sanding sealer is used prior to a finish coat to faciliate making a smooth surface for the finish.
