Hi everyone
My set-up is a gaz furnace 3rd generation; a Heat pump 3 tons 36000 btus. Of course in heating mode, there is a blast of cold air 50F during the defrost cycle, especially during the fixed cycle of 8 to 12 mins, depending of outside temperature and frost on outside coils. My questions are: a) presently W2 and S2 are jumpered as per the notes on the diagram; There are no stats outside because the Gaz Co. monitors the outside temp. and when it reaches +12F it cuts off the Heat Pump and the gaz furnace takes over = no prolem up to now.. my question: in order to get rid of those cold air blasts, I jumped S1 along to W2-S2. The result is the very cold air is tempered by the furnace which comes on because of S1. Is this bad for the compressor or any in-house components?
b) The large line from the compressor is very hot, both outside and inside the house going into the A coil, however it seems that very little heat is being transfered. I measured the Delta (the same thermometer used in the return side and the output side) and I bearily get 2 or 3 degrees difference.
A last point: most of the time the HP dont even go as low as +12 F it goes into the "cutout" mode! Then I use the emergency mode!
This HP is 15 years old and nobody wanted to check the indoor coil, would it not be good mainntenance to clean it? but everytime the tech is too busy...
I would tell you that during the summer, it cools enough, although its a few degrees less than it should be.
Thanks in advance.

Id for sure check the A coil inside How is the filter is it clean the blower clean?

You said in other post that you had a new compressor put in did this cold air thing just start now?Put the tstat back like it was

A new compressor on a unit 15 years old .I dont think I would have put it in on that old a A coil. Did they clean the coil then? ED;)

Thanks for your quick answer. Could you tell me what is the Delta expected. The inside air going into the A coil is lets say 68F, what should I expect (approximately) leaving the coil? measured at about one foot in the duct. I seem to get 2 or 3 degrees difference, perhaps indicating that the Delta is way low?? If you confirm this, I'll try to get a technician do a good clean-up of the A-coil.

I think you should get a hvac tech to look at this now. A 2 or 3 degrees difference across the coil is not right. ED;)

The signal to turn on the electric strip heat on the air handler comes from the defrost control circuit board on the condensing unit, just enough to offset the cold gas that will be trying to air condition the house. Easy enough to check the strip heaters using an ammeter.

If you can have the OAT changed to flip over at 27F it would actually be better, this is about when electric strip heaters kick in... gas is much cheaper than electric, change that set point!
