I have several pieces of vinyl laminate furniture, i.e., an entertainment center, microwave cart. etc.....is there a way to prime and paint these??

Yes, I would suggest washing, lightly sanding, and priming with an alkyd primer, for good adhesion. Use any quality latex for the finish coat.
