Is it necessary to put in a full header for a door in non load bearing wall?

Yes. other wise what else do you have to secure the top of the jamb with and you will get movement above the door, even after rock is hung.

For a doorway in a partition wall, you can get by with just 2"x4" framing all the wall around. A proper header is only needed to distribute & support the weight on a load-bearing wall.

thanks, awesomedell. I am doing just as you said. Perhaps I should have been a little more specific. I'm converting a garage to two bedrooms and didn't think I needed headers.

You'll be fine since there is no load on this wall, nothing to worry about other than having something to hang your door jambs on. Good luck & post back if you have any more questions on your project.
