my co-worker is going to be papering her kitchen ceiling with that paper that looks like faux tin ceiling tiles (one brand is Anaglypta). she purchased the kind of paper that has the flat back, not the "relief" back, so there's no chance of smashing the pattern flat.

she purchased heavy duty wallpaper adhesive, but then saw somewhere that she should be using some sort of clay adhesive, and that it would discolor her paper so she should be prepared to paint the paper after hanging it. what is clay adhesive? just how thick is it? or will the heavy duty adhesive do the job? (she really doesn't want to have to paint the paper!)

thanks!

If it is true Anaglypta, that is designed to be painted. Technically, you hang it, caulk the seam areas and paint it. It could be used unpainted if you wanted though. Any adhesive should work. Clay is probably a good choice, but staining can occur with it. Use Professional 880 or Dynamite 234 instead as these don't stain. Be sure to paste and book (the relaxing step) for the exact amount of time for each strip. Anaglypta tends to expand and performing the exact same steps at the exact same time reduces the pattern miss-match.

Tell her to get some help with the ceiling. Hanging a ceiling paper alone is no fun! :( A ladder can be used as an assistant to support the end that is not on the ceiling yet. Also, avoid oversmoothing Anaglypta as it will "dent" the pattern. Most pros use a bristle type sweep as opposed to a hard plastic one on patterned wallpaper.

Anaglypta on a ceiling. My neck hurts just thinking about it.

My suggestion would be to roll a thin layer of HD Clear on the ceiling before-hand, and let it tack up or dry, then paste the sheets and hang it that way. It won't fall back down on your head like the 3 stooges this way.

And don't forget to prime it first.
