Hi,
I have a large oak tree in my yard. Years ago, one of the large branches either broke off or was cut. The previous owner patched the hole, about 12" around, with cement. I think the brach broke because the patch sits in the truck a few inches. Over the winter, the cement hasbecome loose. How do I repair this without damaging the tree? I'll assume cement is not the way to go.
Thanks

For the benefit of such a large tree, having an arborist come look at it might be the best way to evaluate its condition and plan for its care. The loss of such a tree would be great.
It may be best to remove the concrete and leave the wound, unless it would create a place for water to accumulate. Usually wounds are not treated with coatings.
I would call an arborist.

Hi pmurphy.
I agree with Chfite this should be done ASAP. We have much better repair fillings today than Cement :) . This repair is best done when the tree is dormant like now.
One more thing, some tree cutters call themselves Tree surgeons. Your County Agent should be able to help you find a good Tree Surgeon, it make's a big differance.
Good luck with the repair.

Not all tree maintenance firms have a Certified Arborist, so make sure that's the person who actually comes out & looks at the job. See also http://www.treesaregood.com. No, I don't work for them, I just know of them as a resource!
