I have the most bizarre thing going on. I have a small wild tree growing next to my home. My backyard backs to a wooded area, and I'm constantly trying to keep it from encroaching into my yard. I think maybe this is a seedling that has germinated from something having blown over into my yard.

I WANT IT GONE!!!! How do I kill it before it starts doing foundation damage to my house. Any suggestions? By the way, it's in a perennial flower bed, so I have to be careful how I get rid of it. HELP!

The definition of a weed is any plant that is not desired where it is growing. Thus, you have a weed. If it is a tree, cut and either remove stump or brush with "stump rot" while cut is still fresh so that it can be absorbed into root system. Check at your local garden center for a product for this purpose.

Use a chain saw to cut the stump as close to the ground as possible. Avoid cutting into the ground because it rapidly dulls the cutting teeth of the saw and throws debris into the air.

Drill large holes, a few inches deep, into the stump.

If you are an organic gardener, fill the holes with a source of nitrogen and add water. The nitrogen source can be manure or a home fertilizer high in nitrogen. Apply powdered milk to jump-start the work of fungi. Mushrooms show the fungi are working. Soak the ground around the stump. Cover the stump with a plastic tarp or dirt. Cover the tarp or dirt with mulch. Wet the mulch. You may want to add rocks to anchor the tarp. Remove the tarp and add water and a teaspoon of nitrogen occasionally. Then cover the stump again. You don't want the stump to receive light as it will encourage the growth of shoots off the stump. Use a herbicide to stop new sprouts. However, the roots of one tree can graft with the roots of a nearby tree and kill it as well. The best way to remove sprouts is to just cut them when they are 6 to 8 inches tall with your pruners or loppers.
