Two years ago I bought some gorgeous iron and wood outdoor furniture in need of a little TLC. I asked a friend who is good with wood what to use to refinish the pieces. I ended up sanding and then staining with a water based stain. Then I applied three coats of Helmsman Spar Poly, sanding lightly between coats. It took me forever, but I was the envy of all my neighbors. The pieces spent the winter in my basement for protection.
They emerged next spring just as lovely. Once the summer wore on the poly began to peel and lift. I was SO sick to my stomach after all the time and TLC spent on five pieces. Where did I go wrong? I'm scared to refinish the pieces again and at a loss for what to use! Someone mentioned a new deck(?) product that they said you only put one coat on or a second one will bead up? Anyone have experience with this sort of thing or can point me in the right direction?
