I saw an article on installing a very rustic pine plank floor using No. 2 Grade pine (12" wide) and the "old style" steel cut nails for face nailing (this is NOT a T&G floor). I am expecting, and desiring, that the floor will become very distressed with use- that's the look I want. My question is this: The room is over a very dry crawl space with lots of ventilation and a vapor barrier. The subfloor is 3/4"OSB supported by joists spaced 16". Over the OSB is 5/8" particle board sheathing (there was carpet in the room). Between the OSB and particle board is another vapor barrier. I know that particle board is not suitable for holding floor fasteners. But, if I nail through the particle board, through the OSB, and into the joists, will the particle board present a problem? I'd like to leave the particle board down if possible because I want to raise the level of the floor. Also, how far should the nails protude into the joints to get a secure installation (i.e., what size nails should I use)? Thanks so much for your help.
