How do I know the amount of paint I need to paint my room?

Figure out square footage for the walls.

Each wall, length X height

Add up all the walls, theres your sq. ft.

Most gallons of paint will cover 350 sq. ft.

Check the gallon, it will tell you the spread rate on the can.

If walls are dry and porous, figure more than you would usually need because the walls will suck it in.

In case you were wondering - no, do not subtract the door and window areas unless its a huge opening. A double window or double closet door is not a huge opening.

An average 10x10 room will take a gallon for one coat. An 11x12 is pushing it for coverage with a gallon.

As prowall said, your mileage may vary depending on how old the paint is, how well it was covered the last time, how porous it is, etc.
