As name implies am remodeling a 120 year old home in Montana. The kitchen has linoleum flooring that was probably installed when the stuff was invented. Have tried a 4" scraper to remove it, but the linoleum is so dried up and abused it is coming off in little pieces at a time. A day's worth of work resulted in a bad back, a headache, and only a fraction of the room completed. There has got to be a better way --- Yes?

yes, DO NOT DO IT!

that vinyl has asbestos encapsulated in it, and dry scraping or sanding allows the fibers to become airborn. It's not like a for sure your gonna die thing, but I recommend you stop and figure a way to install over it.
If the fibers become airborn, they will work their way in the vents and if there are little ones around, they could be more likely to be affected.
You can take a hunk of it and get it tested for about 20 bucks, or you can install new 1/4 plywood over the top and forget about it, then install new vinyl or whatever.
there are safe ways to remove asbestos floor, but I won't give the info out, I will let someone else take responsibility.
I don't feel it is a good DIY project.
