I live on the bottom floor of a building and I want to put it hardwood floors (strips). Do I need underlaying? My floor beneath the carpet is concrete, as of right now it is hard to tell if it is copmpletely flat. Would you recomend I fill in the cracks and repair some of the concrete (if any is needed and then lay the hardwood on top of that? Should I use plywood?

fill in the cracks and make the floor flat with a leveler, then lay a moisture barrier, then an engineered floating wood floor.

I use webcrete, but other installers might have a better leveler.
a moisture barrier is at least a six mil poly that you lay down first, including up the wall a bit. Then you lay the floating wood.
a moisture test at home depot might be a good thing to buy first as well.
